What Is the OC Test?

The Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is a competitive exam for Year 4 students in NSW who want to join an Opportunity Class in Year 5 and 6. OC classes are offered in selected government primary schools and provide an enriched curriculum for academically gifted students.

Think of OC as the primary school equivalent of selective high school — students are grouped with high-achieving peers and taught by specialist teachers. There are around 75 primary schools across NSW that offer OC classes, with roughly 1,600 places available each year for approximately 10,000 applicants.

OC placement is managed by the NSW Department of Education and entry is purely merit-based.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

To sit the OC test your child must:

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a qualifying visa
  • Be enrolled in Year 4 at a NSW government, Catholic, independent, or home-school setting during the year they apply
  • Be applying for a Year 5 OC placement the following year

There are no catchment restrictions for OC — your child can apply for any OC school in NSW, though most families choose schools within a reasonable commute.

OC Test Format and Structure

The OC test is a single session held on a weekday, usually in mid-year. It consists of two main components:

ComponentFormatDurationQuestions
Thinking SkillsMultiple choice30 minutes~35
ReadingMultiple choice30 minutes~35
MathematicsMultiple choice30 minutes~35

Thinking Skills tests abstract reasoning — pattern recognition, sequences, spatial reasoning, and logical deduction. These questions are designed to measure innate problem-solving ability rather than taught knowledge.

Reading assesses comprehension of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry passages. Students must identify main ideas, infer meaning, understand vocabulary in context, and evaluate author intent.

Mathematics covers the NSW syllabus up to and including Year 4 content — number operations, fractions, measurement, geometry, data, and word problems. Questions go beyond rote calculation to test mathematical reasoning.

Unlike the selective school test, the OC test does not include a writing component.

Key Dates and Timeline

The OC test follows a consistent annual cycle:

  • Applications open: Usually late April or early May
  • Applications close: Usually mid-May (strict deadline)
  • Test date: Usually late July or early August
  • Results released: Usually mid-October
  • Placement offers: Sent alongside results in October
  • Accept/decline deadline: Approximately two weeks after offers

Dates shift slightly each year — always check the NSW Department of Education website for the exact schedule. Missing the application deadline means your child cannot sit the test that year.

How Is the OC Test Scored?

Each component is scored individually, and results are combined into an overall composite score. The three test components are weighted equally in the final ranking.

Students also receive school assessment scores from their current school, which contribute to the overall placement score. The exact weighting between test performance and school assessment varies and is not publicly disclosed.

Placement offers are based on:

  • The student's overall composite score (test + school assessment)
  • The student's school preferences (families nominate up to 3 OC schools)
  • Available places at each school

There is no fixed "pass mark" — it depends on the competition each year. Schools in high-demand areas (like James Ruse feeder schools) typically require higher scores.

OC Test vs Selective School Test

Many parents wonder how the OC test compares to the selective school placement test taken in Year 6. Here's a quick comparison:

FeatureOC Test (Year 4)Selective Test (Year 6)
Entry yearYear 5Year 7
SubjectsThinking, Reading, MathsThinking, Reading, Maths, Writing
Writing componentNoYes (30 minutes)
Number of places~1,600~4,200
Applicants~10,000~15,000
School assessmentYes (included)No (test only)

Being in an OC class does not guarantee entry to a selective school — students must still sit the selective test in Year 6. However, OC students are generally well-prepared, as the enriched curriculum aligns closely with the skills tested in the selective exam.

How to Prepare for the OC Test

Effective OC preparation balances regular practice with genuine skill development. Here's what works:

  • Start 6–12 months before the test — this gives enough time to build skills without burnout
  • Focus on Thinking Skills early — this is the hardest component to improve quickly because it tests reasoning, not memorised content
  • Read widely — daily reading of varied texts (fiction, non-fiction, news articles) builds the comprehension skills tested in the Reading component
  • Master Year 4 maths thoroughly — ensure your child is confident across the entire syllabus before attempting extension problems
  • Practise under timed conditions — time pressure is a major factor; students need to learn pacing
  • Use mock exams — sitting full-length practice tests under exam conditions is the single most effective preparation strategy

Avoid over-tutoring. The research is clear: children who are exhausted and anxious perform worse, not better. Two to three focused practice sessions per week is plenty for most students.

Practise With Realistic Mock Exams

The best preparation mirrors real test conditions. SelectiveExams offers free monthly mock exams covering Maths, Thinking Skills, and Reading — the same subjects tested in the OC exam.

Every mock exam features:

  • Strict timed conditions that replicate exam-day pressure
  • Instant results with worked solutions for every question
  • Performance analytics showing strengths and areas to improve
  • Public leaderboard so students can see how they compare

While our exams are designed for the selective school test format, the core skills — mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension, and thinking skills — are identical to what's tested in the OC exam. Students preparing for OC will benefit enormously from this practice.
